beginner-level Waacking class ☆

from the underground queer clubs of 70s LA to stages across the world today ☆ this year’s programme brings a Waacking / Punking workshop that dives into the history, roots, and power of a dance born from resistance and self-expression.
Punking, the foundation of what we now call Waacking, emerged in the 1970s by the black and hispanic queer folks at the downtown LA ghetto gay clubs during the disco era. at a time when it was dangerous to be openly queer, dance became a weapon, a shield, and a language of survival. It was both storytelling and self-liberation—an art form born from oppression.
facilitated by Siri Gowri
Siri Gowri’s signature works merge dance with storytelling across stage, screen, and fashion. Based between Prague and Bangalore, her journey began in her early teens within India’s vibrant underground street dance community, training in choreography and styles like waacking and dancehall. From underground battles to high-profile stages, her work bridges the raw energy of street styles with the precision of performance art, seen in showcases with Onslaught Crew and OWND at Red Bull Dance Your Style, music videos, and fashion–movement collaborations with homegrown brands like NoBorders and Tailor & Circus. She is currently working in film as an assistant director and pursuing her master’s in photography at FAMU International in Prague.
